In this recipe s example, we added the DispId attribute to the event-handler method defined in the IDescriptionNotifier interface like this: [DispId(21)] void DescChanged(string newDesc, string oldDesc); This is needed because of the way this dispinterface is used by Visual Basic 6.0. If you implement an event handler for all events defined in the interface, you won t have a problem. However, if any defined events are not handled in your VB6 code, you may receive a DISP_E_UNKNOWNNAME error (x80020006) when running your code. This can easily occur if you have a number of events defined, but need to handle only a few of them. The error occurs when the VB runtime calls IDispatch.GetIDsOfNames. If no event handler is registered for an event, VB is unable to resolve the dispatch ID and the error is returned. However, by declaring our own dispatch ID in managed code using the DispId attribute, we eliminate the problem. The number 21 that was used for this DispId attribute has no special meaning. You can assign any dispatch ID as long as it is unique within the interface. Personally, I would consider this a COM interop bug. But based on various newsgroup postings, this bug has existed for a number of years, going back to the original version of .NET. It doesn t appear that this behavior will change anytime soon. A good rule of thumb is that if you are planning on consuming managed events from VB6, you should always define a DispId for each handler method.
